I’d been told Maine was beautiful, but nothing prepared me for how good the Atlantic air feels the moment you arrive. Pine forests, rocky coves, lighthouses perched on cliffs; it all looks like a postcard brought to life. For a quick weekend getaway, Maine is unbeatable. Here’s how my two-and-a-half days turned into one of my favorite short trips in the USA.

Friday Evening: Exploring Portland’s Old Port & My First Lobster Roll

I checked into Portland just as the sun started dropping toward the horizon. The Old Port is every bit as charming as people say. Brick buildings, cobblestone streets, working fishing piers, and the smell of the ocean everywhere.

I wandered past indie boutiques and bookstores before settling at a waterfront spot for my very first Maine lobster roll. The warm, buttered bun and sweet, perfect lobster meat felt like the official welcome ceremony to the state. After dinner, I walked along the harbor watching boats returning with the day’s catch. Portland instantly felt warm, walkable, and full of character.

Saturday Morning: Portland Head Light & the Cliff Walk

I started my Saturday at Fort Williams Park to see Portland Head Light, often ranked as one of the best lighthouses in Maine. Fog drifted off the ocean as I arrived, revealing the lighthouse towering above the jagged cliffs.

I followed the Cliff Walk, a coastal path with panoramic ocean views the entire way. Waves slammed the rocks, salt spray hung in the air, and families cooked breakfast on portable grills. It was one of those mornings where the ocean felt close enough to touch.

Saturday Afternoon: Ogunquit & Walking the Marginal Way

Next, I drove south to Ogunquit, a place known for its beaches, galleries, and coastal charm. The highlight was the Marginal Way, a mile-long seaside path with sweeping views of waves crashing against granite cliffs.

Every few minutes I stopped to admire the scenery. Wildflowers shaking in the wind, gulls circling overhead, deep blue ocean unrolling below. The trail ends at Perkins Cove, a postcard-perfect harbor with boats bobbing in the water. I grabbed fried clams from a little seafood shack and watched sailboats glide out into the bay.

Saturday Evening: Sunset at Nubble Light

I ended the day with sunset at Cape Neddick’s Nubble Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the U.S. and now I understand why. As the sky turned gold and pink, the lighthouse lit up against the darkening rocks like a scene from a movie.

Locals sat on the boulders with ice cream cones; families posed for photos; the ocean kept its steady rhythm. Maine has a way of slowing your breath and making simple moments feel meaningful.

Sunday Morning: Acadia National Park (Totally Worth the Drive)

I left early for Acadia National Park, and even though it’s a bit of a drive, it’s absolutely worth including in a weekend trip to Maine.

I hiked the Ocean Path, a spectacular trail linking Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliffs. The sound of the Atlantic pounding the rocks echoed like distant thunder. Later I drove up to Cadillac Mountain for panoramic views over the scattered islands of Frenchman Bay.

If hiking isn’t on your agenda, Bar Harbor offers coffee shops, waterfront strolls, and plenty of spots to relax before heading back south.

Sunday Afternoon: Breweries, Blueberries & One Last Lobster Roll

On my way back, I stopped at one of Maine’s many craft breweries. Outdoor picnic tables, dogs lying in the sun, live music, it felt like a perfect Maine afternoon. I tried a blueberry ale, because honestly, what else could I order here?

Before leaving, I made sure to have one more lobster roll—this time Maine-style with mayonnaise. I ate it on a bench overlooking the ocean, taking in the last salty breeze before the weekend ended.

Why Maine Is Perfect for a Weekend Trip

Maine surprised me in the best ways. It’s rugged yet peaceful, simple yet unforgettable. In just a weekend, I explored lighthouses, coastal trails, small harbors, oceanfront towns, and one of the most beautiful national parks in America.

If you’re planning a Maine weekend getaway, you truly can’t go wrong. Come hungry, pack layers, and be ready to breathe some of the freshest air anywhere on the East Coast.
